Химические реакции, сопровождающиеся изменением окислительных чисел атомов. Согласно кислородной теории горения А. Лавуазье (кон. XVIII в.) окислением называются только реакции соединения с кислородом, восстановлением — отнятие кислорода. С введением электронных представлений (1920-1930 гг.) стало возможным распространение понятия "окисление-восстановление" и на реакции, в которых кислород не участвует. Согласно электронной теории, окислением называется отдача электронов атомом, молекулой или ионом: Zn — 2е = Zn2+, а восстановлением — присоединение: Сl2+2е = 2Сl.
Окислителями называют нейтральные атомы, молекулы или ионы, принимающие электроны, восстановителями — отдающие электроны (атом Zn в первом примере). Окисление и восстановление — взаимосвязанные одновременные процессы. Приведенные частные реакции окисления и восстановления составляют единый процесс окисления-восстановления: Zn+Сl2 = ZnCl2. В металлургии окислительно-восстановительные реакции наиболее распространены. Например, они лежат в основе процессов горения, восстановления металлов из руд, коррозии и т.п.
